Pin posters to the walls of war scenes in black and white showing soldiers on the battlefield, ships and submarines at sea and Spitfires above London in a dog fight. A Union Jack in the hall. Display some old memorabilia such as a gramophone, a sewing machine, gas mask and some ration books.

The 1940s was a time for the Big Band sounds of Glenn Miller but also singers such as Frank Sinatra. Pop into the local CD store and you will find some suitable 1940s music compilations so that your guests can dance the night away to the jitterbug, the fox trot and swing dancing.

Food was rationed so be sparing. Luncheon meat, mashed potatoes, baked beans, corned beef stew, bread, cheese, and sausages with bread and butter pudding to finish.

1940s fancy dress costumes and accessories should include long dresses and skirts for the ladies, a pearl necklace, stockings, gloves and a hat with a small veil. The gentlemen should wear double breasted suits, tie and a hat. Alternatively, if you prefer, wear a military uniform or why not dress up as a farm worker.
